The Final Push to Rochester

The Sun Devils Drum and Bugle Corps just completed its last camp before Rochester, NY this past weekend at North Port High School. The weather cooperated, for the most part, the majority of the weekend. This final camp came off the heels of our most successful contest appearance ever. The corps placed third with a 77.938 at the final DCA South contest of the season in Senoia, Ga.

The corps is currently 5th place going into DCA Prelims. We will take the field on Saturday, September 4th at 3:59pm.

The Sun Devils would like to take a moment to thank the Shenandoah Sound Drum and Bugle Corps. As you know, we had several equipment issues over the summer. The worst of which was the breakdown of our equipment truck in West Virginia. This is where Shenandoah came to the rescue. After deciding not to bring the truck back to Florida, we asked Shenandoah if they would accept our truck as a donation; to do with it as they please. They graciously accepted our offer. They also agreed to bring our trailer to Senoia, Ga. It is with the kindness and generosity of Shenandoah Sound that we have our trailer back in Florida.

We thank you Shenandoah Sound. Best of luck at Prelims!

- Our final thought (a la Jerry Springer) -

We leave with these fine pics of our Corps Director, Paul McLemore getting his just due from members of the drumline. They know how to bring an arctic blast to a hot rehearsal day.

Thank you to all of our friends and family for this successful 2010 season. It is not over yet. The best is yet to come!

Comfort Temp Helps Keep The Sun Devils Cool For DCA Atlanta

DCA Atlanta will see The Sun Devils roll in with a box truck rental courtesy of Comfort Temp of Gainesville, FL. Comfort Temp graciously donated the monies to pay for a box truck rental from North Port, FL to Woodstock, GA. We are so thankful to all that have helped us in our time of need as we continue our DCA 2010 run.

On August 1st, the Sun Devils were featured in an article in the Englewood Sun newspaper. Oksana Miroshniechenko, Sun correspondent, detailed the loss of our equipment truck. We are hoping that the local community responds much like Comfort Temp. Our push to Rochester, NY continues.

A Journey of 2600 Miles

After a journey of 2600 miles, over 80 hours on the road, multiple tornado warnings and 1 broken equipment truck, the Sun Devils have returned from Jamestown, New York with the highest score in corps history. After besting their ending score from the 2009 season by over 4 points at their first judged contest of this season, the corps will spend the next weekend cleaning and making changes to the show before returning to the competition field in Woodstock, Georgia on August 7th.

While the weekend was an overall success and had members and staff hungry to hit the rehearsal field, the corps did suffer a serious setback that could impact its ability to get to the remaining shows on the schedule. Somewhere in West Virginia, the Sun Devils venerable equipment truck, affectionately known as “Old Yeller”, suffered serious engine trouble and had to be abandoned and rental vehicles obtained in order to get the equipment home. The corps is eternally grateful to our intrepid truck driving crew of executive director John Hoekstra and corps photographer Mark Scott, who endured a marathon weekend with little sleep and a downpour while transferring the equipment from one truck to the other.

The corps is actively seeking someone with a vehicle capable of towing a 26’ equipment trailer to assist the corps in traveling to the remaining shows on the schedule. Please contact executive director John Hoekstra if you can be of assistance or have any information that may help.
